A test for the hobby's premier hockey card collectors...

1966 Topps USA Test Bobby Orr Rookie #35 PSA NM-MT 8. It seems that each generation delivers to the hockey world a single Chosen One, like Gretzky and Crosby, but the hype surrounding this youngster from Parry Sound, Ontario surpassed anything seen before or since. After leading the Oshawa Generals farm club to the OHA Championship in his third season with the club, Toronto lawyer Alan Eagleson negotiated Orr's first NHL contract with the Bruins, settling on a $25,000 figure which established the eighteen-year old phenom as the highest paid player in League history. The rookie average at the time had been $8,000.

While any trading card that declares the arrival of this pantheon figure upon the professional ice carries enormous collecting intrigue, the offered rarity sets itself apart from and above its contemporaries, much like its subject. This is the profoundly scarce "Test Issue" of the card, a designation verifiable by the absence of any French language text. The final product that was distributed in wax packs was issued in bilingual format in order to satisfy the hockey market's large Quebecois clientele.

To provide some context of just how rare this English-only variant is, we report that just short of 1,000 examples of the standard format appear in the PSA population, while the test version recently crested 100. The NM-MT 8 status of this particular example places it in a grouping of eight, with just six superior. While some Gretzky fans might disagree, many advanced hockey card collectors consider this unique rarity to be the most significant post-war entry in The Standard Catalog.
