Description

1966 Topps Bobby Orr Rookie #35 SGC Mint 9 - Pop Three, One Higher. Tied to a Boston Bruins organization that caught wind of his prodigious skill at the tender age of fourteen, the exceptionally talented Bobby Orr was ready for the big stage of the NHL by the time he was a 6' 200-pound eighteen year old. Orr had all the skills from a very early age -- superb speed, phenomenal stickhandling, and out-of-this-world defensive prowess. Few who had seen him play would say that the Bruins were out of line when they made the teen the highest-paid player in NHL history for his rookie campaign.

To proclaim that he measured up to the sky-high expectations of his debut professional campaign would be a glaring understatement -- he harvested a wide array of accolades including the Calder Trophy as the league's best rookie, a spot on the Second All-Star Team, and finished second in the league in scoring by defenseman. It was a sign of spectacular things to come. Orr revitalized Beantown's zest for hockey much in the same way that Eddie Shore had sparked it a generation before.

Presented is an SGC Mint 9 example of the trading card that signaled that sea change for the Bruins franchise and the National Hockey League at large, unquestionably one of the most important and coveted post-war entries in The Standard Catalog. As one of just three representations to reach the MINT summit with one single other reaching the highest peak of the SGC rankings, the presented lot offers nothing but superlatives to report in a condition assessment. The full-bleed color format that has long served as a maddening complication in the search for perfection within this issue is unblemished from every edge to each razor-sharp corner, those borders perfectly balanced around an image produced with the crispest registration.

Veteran hobbyists are well aware that the best-of-the-best has always seen the sharpest incline in pricing over the passage of time, so there will be plenty of investment-minded bidders battling amongst the true hockey faithful.
