Description
Scarce 1966 Topps USA Test Hockey Complete Set (66) With NM Bobby Orr Rookie! In the modern era, few sets have the same passionate following as does the 1966 Topps "USA Test" Hockey series. This limited promotion is complete at 66 cards but to complete a set is a significant challenge. Their very little distribution in the United States ranks this prized edition among the rarest hockey cards of the 1960's and most other eras. Their look parallels the more common variety except for the French language text on the reverse, the richly colored wood grain borders are somewhat lighter and there is a "Made in the USA" caption. The set is also renowned for having "the" hockey card of the modern era - the rookie card debut of hockey legend Bobby Orr. The young phenom not only lived up to but exceeded all expectations. Such immense talent, Orr didn't just play the game, he transformed it. During his 12 year career, the Bruins won the Stanley Cup in 1970 and 1972, they made it to but lost in the finals in 1974. Orr contributed to the evolution of the business side of hockey. His was the first professional ice hockey contract negotiated by an agent. This turned the 16-year old the highest-paid rookie in the history of the NHL at the time. His list of honors and records is considerable. Some of his awards/honors include: NHL First All-Star Team - eight years in a row from 1968 to 1975; Calder Memorial Trophy (rookie of the year) - 1967 (the youngest recipient ever); James Norris Trophy - eight times from 1968 to 1975; Art Ross Trophy twice in 1969/70 and 1974/75; Hart Memorial Trophy - three times from 1970-1972; Conn Smythe Trophy - twice in 1970 and 1972; Lou Marsh Trophy - (Canadian athlete of the year) in 1970; Lester B. Pearson Award - 1975; Sports Illustrated "Sportsman of the Year" for 1970; Voted the greatest athlete in Boston history in the Boston Globe in 1975 beating out Ted Williams, Bill Russell, Carl Yastrzemski and Bob Cousy. At 31 years of age, Orr became the youngest athlete inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1979 after the mandatory three-year waiting period was waived. Offered is a 66-card complete set in mostly EX to NM/MT condition. A total of 15 cards have been graded by SGC.
