Description

Massive painted golf ball was autographed by both 2012 Ryder Cup teams!

2012 LeRoy Neiman Ryder Cup Original Artwork--His Final Creation! For over a half century, LeRoy Neiman stood as one of the most decorated and collectible artists in America. When narrowing the field to those participating in the subgenre of sports art, there is no contender to Neiman's supremacy, and the pace of his fame and desirability has only quickened with his 2012 passing at the age of ninety-one. His works have graced the covers of programs for many of the greatest sporting events of the post-war era, and hang in Halls of Fame and fine art museums alike. His serigraphs alone garnered annual gross sales over $10 million, a trend sure to continue for decades to come.

Like Sandy Koufax and John Elway, Neiman left the game as a true Champion, creating one of the most striking works of his long career as his final bow. Five massive golf balls were manufactured in advance of the 2012 Ryder Cup, each to be sold at a charity banquet to benefit the Ronald McDonald House. One bore Michael Jordan's signature and the famous Nike "Jumpman" logo, another was painted by noted Chicago artist Susan Kissinger. But clearly the Neiman entry was the most noteworthy, an artistic tribute to his own favorite painter, abstract expressionist Jackson Pollock (1912-56).

We can see Pollock's "splash art" influence in both this specific creation and Neiman's work in general, the bold application of color treading that narrow ledge between form and chaos. The bright orb holds the largest Neiman autograph ever rendered, as well as the signatures of all twenty-four Ryder Cup participants, including Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson. Bubba Watson, Jim Furyk, Rory McIlroy, Sergio Garcia and more. A thick binder of documentation pictures many of these athletes, and Neiman himself, posing with or signing the massive sphere. Various charity paperwork relating to the initial offering of the artwork is here as well.

The work survives without any condition flaws worthy of note beyond a crack to the plexiglass of the green base. The autographs remain as bold as the date of their application. Part painting, part sculpture and 100% Neiman, this final creation is a fitting memorial to the prolific master. Lengthy photographic and written documentation as noted. Full LOA from PSA/DNA (autograph).
