Description
2011 Tiger Woods Masters Tournament Worn Gloves Complete Set of 4. He had been, for a full decade, not only the greatest golfer on the planet but, according to most pundits, the greatest that had ever played. Less than a year after declaring himself a professional at age twenty, Woods was ranked number one in the world in 1997, the fastest ascent to the sport's pinnacle in history. In 2000, he'd string together a chain of six consecutive tournament victories, tying or breaking nine US Open tournament records in what Sports Illustrated called, "the greatest performance in golf history." He'd earn status as the youngest owner of golf's career Grand Slam by the end of the year, becoming in early 2001 only the second man since Bobby Jones to hold all four Major titles at a single time. Only Babe Ruth had ever done more to raise the profile of his sport. But the fragile nature of such athletic dominance only serves to illustrate how remarkable it had been. Just as fans and sportswriters alike had begun to question whether the near certainty of a Woods victory had robbed the sport of the drama that made tournaments compelling, cracks began to form in his previously impenetrable armor. By September 2004, Woods had surrendered his number one ranking, ending a streak of 264 consecutive weeks of reign. The passing of his father in 2006, and a highly-publicized sex scandal in 2009, only exacerbated Tiger's struggles.
But those who wondered if the Tiger magic was gone for good were heartened by a masterful performance at the 2011 Masters Tournament, from which this lot, and two others presented within this Platinum Night auction, derive. Tiger was rock-solid through the first three rounds of the fabled tournament at Augusta but truly brilliant in the Sunday finale, twice capturing a share of the lead on the final eighteen before finishing with a five-under sixty-seven, four behind South African Charl Schwartzel, who would claim the Green Jacket.
Presented are the gloves worn by Tiger Woods during each of his four rounds at the 2011 Masters, each exhibiting sweaty wear beneath the sport's brightest spotlight. Each glove is boldly signed by Woods, who adds "1/1" designation at the close of each black sharpie application to assure singular significance.
As is the case with the other Woods 2011 Masters lots on offer within this Platinum Night auction, the gloves were sourced through Upper Deck Authenticated, the official marketing company for all Tiger Woods memorabilia. Those familiar with the distribution policies of UDA in regard to upper-echelon game used gear are well aware that the price points upon initial release for these Masters gloves were solid four-figures individually. The bid required to acquire the complete ensemble our consignor presents in three Platinum Night lots was particularly substantial. We've never encountered another full-run before. Individual COA from UDA for each glove.
