Description

1939 Ryder Cup Captain's Trophy Presented to Sam Snead. Marauding German u-boats in the Atlantic kept the British team on dry land this year, leaving the American team without its opponent in the scheduled tournament at Jacksonville, Florida's Ponte Vedra Country Club. Instead, the American team played a schedule of exhibitions to placate disappointed fans, with Walter Hagen serving as the team's honorary captain, and the great Sam Snead as the other, participatory captain.

Offered is the distinctive loving cup presented to the latter for his service to the patriotic cause, one of the earliest Snead trophies earned during a peerless career at the sport's highest level. Ultimately Snead would play on seven Ryder Cup teams (this would have brought the tally to eight) and he'd serve as honorary captain for another in 1969.

The impressive design of the sixteen and a half inch tall symbol of excellence should be familiar to any true fan of international golf competition, an artfully crafted loving cup topped by a figural golfer. The Cup bears Eagle and Lion imagery on the face along with the Stars and Stripes and Union Jack. Directly opposite are the engraved words "Ryder Cup." Engraved on the band just above the wooden base is the attribution: "Sam Snead, Captain 1939."

The gold-plated beauty exhibits a light degree of handling wear, but our catalog imagery should indicate that the aesthetics remain very strong, well in keeping with the enormous historical relevance and collecting appeal. Letter of provenance from Jack Snead.
