Description

Extremely rare five-piece Sheffield tea and coffee set with engraved golf scenes. Included in this set is a 5 1/2"h teapot with two golf scenes. The scene on the left side of the pot depicts a caddy in jacket, cap and long pants, teeing up a ball while his golfer observes. The scene on the right depicts a golfer in cap, jacket and plus fours with club in hand, gazing down the fairway. The 8 3/4"h coffee pot also has two scenes. The one on the left depicts a golfer in cap, jacket and plus fours at the top of his back swing. In the background, observing, is his caddy. The scene on the right depicts the same golfer in his back swing. The sugar bowl has golf scenes on both the front and back. The scene on the front depicts a bearded golfer in cap, jacket and plus fours at the top of his back swing. The golfer in this scene looks a little like Tom Morris. The scene on the back depicts a golfer in bowler hat, jacket and plus fours, lining up a putt. In both scenes there is a caddy as well as a series of hills in the background. The 3 5/8"h creamer also has two scenes. The left scene depicts two golfers: one lining up a putt and the other observing. The scene on the right depicts a golfer in bowler hat, jacket and plus fours, putting. The two-handled oval tray (27"w x 17 3/4"h) has one large scene. This scene appears to be different from the others because it is a warm weather scene, possibly Calcutta. The scene depicts seven golfers in varying phases of the golf swing, three caddies and four observers. In the background are palm trees, a tent, several small figures and two buildings. This spectacular set, with a total of five pieces, is the only one of its type that this cataloger has ever seen. Sets are often found without lids for sugar bown and creamer, which is the case here. Circa 1898. Very good.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
