    Description

Circa 1950 Ben Hogan Match Worn Golf Shoes. In his most famous photograph, his one-iron shot at Merion after coming back from a near-fatal automobile accident to win the US Open, Hogan wears white bucks nearly identical to the pair offered here. Though the spike pattern on the sole is slightly different, it's likely that this well-worn pair of shoes from renowned British cobbler "Peal & Co. Ltd." dates to this approximate period.

Our consignor informs us that he had acquired them through George "Scorpy" Doyle, a decades-long fixture at Tamarisk Country Club where he became friends with legendary figures from the golf world and beyond--Hogan, Nicklaus, Sarazen, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra. A photocopy of a handwritten telegram sent from Hogan to Doyle congratulating him upon his retirement from Tamarisk establishes the friendship. Our various auction result databases contain just a single example of Hogan match worn shoes, a clear indicator of how rare such relics are.
