The Professional Golf Association tips its cap to a legend

1998 PGA Tour Lifetime Achievement Award Presented to Sam Snead. You think the Hall of Fame is an exclusive club? Well, you wouldn't even need to take off your shoes to count the legends honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the PGA Tour--only ten in the history of the organization have made the grade. Gene Sarazen was the first honoree, in 1996, with Snead's legendary foil Byron Nelson making the club a duo in 1997. And so it was only a matter of time, just one year in fact, before Slammin' Sammy got the call, sharing the 1998 podium with another fellow you may know, a golfer named Arnold Palmer. The years to follow would bring Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and former President George H.W. Bush into the fold, each recognized for their long and distinguished careers, and their essential contributions to the sport.

To the best of our knowledge, this is the only such Award ever to enter the collecting hobby, an impressive tri-handled cup engraved with the PGA Tour logo and the words, "Lifetime Achievement Award, Sam Snead 1998." The trophy cup itself stands thirteen inches in height, with a hefty wood and silver base adding five more inches of altitude. Engraved at the base of the cup: "Tiffany & Co. Makers Sterling Silver."

This enormously significant award is likewise the last major trophy earned by Snead during his eighty-nine years of life, surely causing his mind to drift wistfully back over his multitude of triumphs under the PGA banner. Certainly this represents what may well be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to bring such an artifact into one's private collection, and the ultimate bragging rights for the golf enthusiast.
