    Description

The Golden Bear claims his third Claret Jug

1978 British Open (The Open Championship) 18th Hole Pin Flag, Winner Jack Nicklaus. Neither the setting, the star nor the event gets any bigger than those commemorated here. Presented is the final pin flag that awaited golf's most decorated Major Champion as he completed his masterpiece at the sport's ancestral home of St. Andrews. It was Nicklaus' third and final British Open. The victory established Nicklaus as the first man to win every Major three times, a feat since matched only by Tiger Woods. Nicklaus has been quoted as saying that his 1978 British Open was the finest four days of tee-to-green golf he'd ever produced. He had entered the final round tied with Ben Crenshaw and Simon Owen, producing a clutch three-under sixty-nine to win by two strokes.

The 14x19" canvas banner is boldly printed with the pertinent details in blue and red: "107th Open, St. Andrews, 18." A manufacturer's label on reverse attributes production to "Ransomes of Scotland." Included is a 2003 letter of provenance from veteran Turnberry Golf Course pro Bob Jamieson, a longtime fixture at the highest levels of Scottish golf.

We note that only only Opens at St. Andrews flew a white flag on the eighteenth green, with yellow for the front nine and red for holes ten through seventeen. The tradition was ended after the 1990 Open, adding further unique appeal to this relic.

From Bobby Jones to Sam Snead to Jack Nicklaus to Tiger Woods, the Old Course at St. Andrews has supplied the greatest names in American golf with Open Championship glory for the better part of a century. This rates with the most significant relics from that enduring tradition to appear on the hobby's auction block. What a thrill it would be to present the flag to Nicklaus for signing, and to share in his reminiscences of his proudest moment. Letter of provenance from Turnberry (Scotland) golf pro.
