    Description

1974 Vardon Cup Presented to Sam Snead for His Career Victories. Golf's equivalent of Major League Baseball's "Silver Bat," the Vardon Trophy is awarded annually by the PGA to the Tour's leader in scoring average. While Major victories tend to get more ink in sports pages, it could be argued that the Vardon Trophy is the most honest determinant of greatness on the links, as consistency tends to be the common theme among the true elite. Snead outpaced all competition four times during his career (1938, 1949, 1950, 1955), but his son Jack reports that the winner was required to pay for the hardware in those days, and so Snead chose to save his money. But in 1974 this clear injustice was corrected, and the listed model was presented to Snead as a "career" award.

The chalice itself is crafted from silver-colored metal and bears the text, "Vardon Cup 1974" on its face in raised lettering. It is mounted to the wooden frame that surrounds it, with a hook on back for hanging. The cup measures ten inches in height. Fine condition. Letter of provenance from Jack Snead.
