The definitive symbol of Snead's golf immortality

1974 Golf Hall of Fame Plaque Presented to Sam Snead Upon His Induction. Like Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb and Honus Wagner at the 1939 Grand Opening of the Baseball Hall of Fame, Snead found himself in illustrious company as a member of the first induction class of the Golf Hall of Fame in 1974, joined by a cast of characters that included Bobby Jones, Walter Hagen and Ben Hogan, who he famously battled to a victory in the 1954 Masters. For decades it has been a tradition at every major sports Hall of Fame for the inductee to receive a matching plaque to the permanent specimen that resides in the museum itself. Here we present Snead's personal model.

The molded bronze likeness captures the quiet confidence of this legendary linksman, his smiling face topped, as always, with that trademark straw fedora. The engraved text below his image reads,

"Samuel Jackson Snead,
Born Hot Springs, VA, May 27, 1912

Durable possessor of classic swing through long Championship career. Winner of three Masters (1949, 1952, 1954), Three PGA (1942, 1949, 1951), One British Open (1946). Four times runner-up U.S. Open, only Major title unwon. Once scored 59 in competition. Named to Ryder Cup team eight times, twice captain. PGA Senior Champion six times. Known as The Slammer due to long accurate drives."

While little could match the joy or sense of satisfaction that accompanies victory in a Major, it could be argued that the greatest honor any athlete could receive is the assurance of immortality that comes with induction into his sport's Hall of Fame. Surely there are many who would argue that this singular artifact represents the most significant offering in The Sam Snead Collection. The wooden panel upon which the bronze frieze and plaque reside exhibits minor handling wear at left edge and measures 14x21" in size. Letter of provenance from Jack Snead.
