Description
1969 Ryder Cup Team-Issued Bags (3) Owned & Used by Sam Snead. As the most decorated golfer in American history, Mr. Snead was a regular member of the Ryder Cup team in its battles with the Brits, earning victory in each of the seven in which he played. Only once, when he served as a non-playing captain of the American side, did his team fail to claim victory, instead concluding with the most famous draw in golf history. Jack Nicklaus' famous concession of Tony Jacklin's final putt to assure a tie score served to immortalize this event, and collectors justifiably consider the few rare relics to surface from this edition to be particularly desirable as a result.Certainly the provided lot ranks near the top of that population, the three matching bags issued by the PGA to Captain Snead for the competition at the Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, England. Best here is the club bag, featuring an oversized "Ryder Cup 1969 Team" emblem and embroidered "Sam Snead" on the front. Though Snead did not compete in the tournament, the bag shows solid use from subsequent action--a tag from a 1972 tournament remains affixed to the strap hook. A matching umbrella with the logo of the 1969 Ryder Cup is here as well.
The matching shag bag (15x11x8") and duffel (22x14x8") are similarly constructed and adorned, each with the Ryder Cup emblem and embroidered "Sam Snead" attribution. And, like the golf bag, these survive in strong condition, with all zippers and snaps functional and no tearing of the tri-colored leather. Wear to the Ryder Cup emblems (which are effectively large decals) represents the main condition caveat. The first bag set of its type we've ever encountered. Included is a modern print of a photograph of Snead with the Ryder Cup team. Letter of provenance from Jack Snead.
