    Description

After a disappointing British Open, Nicklaus was too hot to handle as he added the Wanamaker Trophy to his collection

1963 PGA Championship, Dallas Athletic Club, Dallas, TX: Vindication. Jack Nicklaus opened 1963 with a victory at the Masters Tournament but then failed to successfully defend his U.S. Open title at The Country Club. Then, seeking his first British Open victory, he missed making a playoff with Bob Charles and Phil Rodgers by a stroke. Five days later, in the midst of a fifty-degree swing in weather conditions, he would tee off in the PGA Championship under brutally hot and humid conditions at the Dallas Athletic Club.

As the mercury passed one hundred degrees, Nicklaus closed with a five-under-par sixty-six to edge Dave Ragan by two strokes. At age twenty-three, he joined Gene Sarazen, Byron Nelson and Ben Hogan as the only players to win the Masters, the U.S. Open and the PGA Championship. At the awards ceremony, he and his wife Barbara were forced to use a towel to hold the scoldingly hot trophy.

The Walter Spitzmiller Collection of Jack Nicklaus Original Artwork

This is one of eighteen lots that represent a shared labor of love between award-winning sports artist Walter Spitzmiller and the iconic Jack Nicklaus, one of the most decorated golfers of all time. Together, this pair set out to create a visual record of Nicklaus' eighteen major championships to form a special portfolio of limited edition giclee prints entitled, "Jack's Majors." Only one hundred editions were made.

Nicklaus was thoroughly moved when the challenging endeavor was complete, saying, "I have always respected Walt's work and how he interprets a scene and a moment in history. Walt dedicated himself to the challenge of putting to canvas the story of my eighteen majors. It took me twenty-five years to win them, and it took Walt eight years to paint them. I hope he can reflect on his body of work with pride, because he should."

Each work is oil on canvas, in pristine condition. It is unquestionably the finest series of visual works dedicated to this giant of American athletics.
