Description

1961 Canada Cup Trophy Won by Sam Snead, Team Model. The Dorado Beach course in Puerto Rico ranked among the most treacherous in the sport, abundantly trapped with water and sand, but Snead shot 67-67-70-68, losing only a single ball to the drink. The great Arnold Palmer had been slated as Snead's teammate in this international team competition, but a late scratch brought fifty-one year old Jimmy Demaret in as a replacement. After a four-week layoff, and with only one practice round to prepare, Demaret shot a solid 288 to help propel the Americans to a twelve-stroke victory over the second place Aussies.

Presented is the team trophy issued to Snead for the pair's dominant performance in the Caribbean, topped by a gilt silver bowl engraved, "The Canada Cup" and bearing the maker's mark of "Birks Sterling." A marble pedestal just below holds an engraved plaque reading, "For Annual International Invitation Golf Competition," while the wooden base presents another engraved, "1961 Canada Cup Matches, Puerto Rico, Victory Replica, Sam Snead." We should stress that the word "replica" is meant to indicate that this is a smaller version of the lineal trophy (much like the smaller Stanley Cups that are awarded to players). This is the original trophy presented to Snead.

The trophy exhibits expected tarnishing but no condition concerns that are not easily remedied. Height is 5.25", with the diameter of the mouth of the cup at five inches. Letter of provenance from Jack Snead.
