Description
1960 Canada Cup Trophy Won by Sam Snead, Team Model. Two faces on American golf's Mount Rushmore--Sam Snead and Arnold Palmer--joined forces at Portmarnock, Ireland to claim the team title in the 1960 edition of the Canada Cup, the third tournament team victory for the United States. The margin of victory was eight strokes for this iconic duo, their 565 tally over four rounds besting strong efforts from England and Australia, who took second and third place respectively.Presented is the team trophy issued to Snead for America's dominant performance, topped by a gilt silver bowl engraved, "The Canada Cup" and bearing the maker's mark of "Birks Sterling." A marble pedestal just below holds an engraved plaque reading, 1960 Canada Cup Matches, Ireland," while the wooden base presents further engraving: "Victory Replica Presented to Sam Snead." We should stress that the word "replica" is meant to indicate that this is a smaller version of the lineal trophy (much like the smaller Stanley Cups that are awarded to players). This is the original trophy presented to Snead.
The trophy exhibits expected tarnishing but no condition concerns that are not easily remedied. Height is 5.25", with the diameter of the mouth of the cup at five inches. Letter of provenance from Jack Snead.
