Description

1951 Ryder Cup Captain's Trophy Presented to Sam Snead. The former colonies made short work of the Empire in this ninth edition of the international competition, stringing the American winning streak to five with a nine and a half to two and a half victory at the Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst, North Carolina. The two-day competition was held Friday and Sunday, with Saturday free so spectators and participants could attend the highly anticipated gridiron battle in Chapel Hill of North Carolina and Tennessee.

Captain Snead was victorious on both days, paired with Lloyd Mangrum for a five and four win in Friday's foursome matches and defeating Max Faulkner four and three in Sunday's singles. For his captaincy of the winning side, he was presented the eponymous trophy of the tournament we proudly offer here.

The impressive design of the sixteen and a half inch tall symbol of excellence should be familiar to any true fan of international golf competition, an artfully crafted loving cup topped by a figural golfer. Still solely an affair of the British Empire and its former colony in 1951, this Ryder Cup bears Eagle and Lion imagery on the face along with the Stars and Stripes and Union Jack. Directly opposite are the engraved words "Ryder Cup." Engraved on the band just above the wooden base is the attribution: "Sam Snead, Captain 1951, Pinehurst."

The gold-plated beauty presents without any visible condition flaws, effectively unchanged from this first of three years of Snead's service as leader of the American side. Letter of provenance from Jack Snead.
