Description
1951 PGA Championship Gold Medal Won by Sam Snead. This tournament at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pennsylvania marked the first occasion that the PGA Championship returned to a former battleground, the great Gene Sarazen capturing the title in 1922. In this 1951 edition it was Snead who found himself the last man standing, handily eliminating Walter Burkemo in the Tuesday final seven and six in the match play format. Snead's victor's purse was $3,500, with this elegant gold medal to serve as an enduring symbol of the achievement. This would prove to be the third and final PGA Championship for the iconic golfer, and his sixth of seven career Majors. The medal remains housed in the original leather presentation case, and a gold embossed ribbon on the lid announces the details: "Winner, 1951 P.G.A. Championship." The medal itself is stamped "14K" on the edge and pictures a golfer in full swing on obverse along with a winged victory figure holding a laurel wreath. A single .15 carat real diamond is inset at top of reverse above a gorgeous golf landscape, a bag of clubs, and the text, "The Professional Golfers' Association of America Championship, Winner 1951." The medal measures 1.75" in diameter and weighs 1.8 ounces. Fine condition.Letter of provenance from Jack Snead.
