The second of Snead's three PGA Championships
1949 PGA Championship Gold Medal Won by Sam Snead. Hermitage Country Club in Lakeside, Virginia was the field of battle for this thirty-first playing of the PGA Championship, the only time in history that a Major Championship has been contested in Snead's home state. The iconic linksman made good use of his home field advantage, dispatching runner-up Johnny Palmer three and two in the Tuesday match play final to claim the winner's purse of $3,500 and the impressive Gold Medal we present here. The win was particularly noteworthy as the first time that a player claimed the Masters and PGA Championships in a single season, as well as setting the record for the oldest man to win the latter (though Snead would break his own mark in 1951).The elegantly-crafted medal representing the fourth of Slammin' Sammy's seven Major Championships features a figural golfer and winged victory on obverse, with "14K" stamped on the edge. Verso features an inset .15 carat real diamond above a gorgeous golf landscape, a bag of clubs and the text, "The Professional Golfers' Association of America Championship, Winner 1949." The medal measures 1.75" in diameter and weighs 1.8 ounces. Fine condition. Letter of provenance from Jack Snead.
