Description
1949 North and South Open Championship Gold Medal Won by Sam Snead. Jack Snead's letter of provenance tells the story well: "Dad won his second North-South Open in 1949 at Pinehurst #2 in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Donald Ross was the golf professional and golf course architect at the resort at that time. He presented this gold medal to Dad on the steps of the Carolina Hotel. This tournament was considered a Major. The Miami Open, L.A. Open, Western Open and the The Metropolitan were also considered Majors." The tournament at Pinehurst had been one of the most prestigious in the country during the first half of the twentieth century, but course patriarch Richard Tufts, a great advocate of amateurism, refused to increase prize money in line with the PGA Tour, a decision that led to the demise of the tournament after 1951.The raised crest of the Pinehurst Golf Club commands the obverse of the victor's medal, with simply "Sam Snead" engraved upon verso. Stamping at bottom edge reads, "LGB 10K." Diameter 1.5". Fine condition. Included is modern print of photograph of Snead receiving medal. Letter of provenance from Jack Snead.
