1942 PGA Championship Wanamaker Trophy Won by Sam Snead.
The legendary Snead still holds the record as the oldest player ever to make the cut in a major, aged sixty-seven years and two months at the 1979 PGA Championship. But his most glorious days in this storied tournament came in 1942, 1949 and 1951, when he claimed the fabled Wanamaker Cup as victor. With the 1949 and 1951 models having commanded $101,575 and $119,500 respectively in past Heritage auctions, the presented 1942 model stands as the last opportunity to claim one of Snead's personal PGA Championship trophies.

It is the namesake loving cup of Rodman Wanamaker, heir to a department store empire who aimed to improve the perception of professional golfers as merely "hired help" with the creation of The Professional Golfers Association of America in 1916. The permanent trophy is passed from winner to winner each successive year, but a smaller replica is awarded in perpetuity, and it is that sixteen-inch tall version we present here, one of the most important golf awards ever to reach the public auction block. The gorgeous sterling relic is engraved on the body of the cup, "Annual Championship of the Professional Golfers Association of America, Rodman Wanamaker Trophy," while a band encircling the wooden base attributes the prize to "Sam Snead, Champion, 1942."

The event was held at Seaview Country Club in Galloway Township, New Jersey, with Snead defeating Jim Turnesa in the final round of match play two and one. It was the first of Snead's seven major titles, and the last tournament in which he competed prior to his enlistment in the U.S. Navy. As the first major victory for the sport's most prolific winner, it's one of the most significant golf awards ever made available for public sale. Letter of provenance from Jack Snead.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
