Along with the victor's medal likewise presented within this auction, Snead earned the presented trophy for his fine performance north of the border. Snead was a common sight on the leader board in this tournament, winning three times in a four-year span, with this victory coming in the form of a single-shot playoff defeat of Jug McSpadden, best remembered as the first pro golfer to shoot a fifty-nine on a par 71 course (at Brackenridge Park Golf Club, San Antonio, TX, 1939).This playing of the Canadian Open was the first of four (1940, 1947, 1953, 1963) contested at the Scarboro Golf and Country Club in eastern Toronto, rated one of the nation's top courses. Snead's victory here, his eighteenth of eighty-two career PGA Tour wins, was rewarded with the presented trophy. Obverse bears the logo of the Seagram distillery, the sponsor of the tournament, with engraving reading, "Gold Cup, Canadian Open Golf Championship 1940." Verso is engraved, "Won by Sam Snead, Scarboro G. & C.C., Score 281, Toronto." The double-handled sterling silver loving cup stands eight inches tall on its green marble base and exhibits no condition issues of note. Letter of provenance from Jack Snead.
