One of just two major championship trophies won by Picard!

1939 PGA Championship Wanamaker Trophy Presented to Henry Picard. In the same week and city where Lou Gehrig delivered his tearful "Luckiest Man" farewell, World Golf Hall of Famer Henry Picard joined such links legends as Walter Hagen, Gene Sarazen and Byron Nelson in pursuit of the prize we proudly offer here, the Wanamaker Trophy awarded to the winner of the 1939 PGA Championship. Located just two miles from the grounds of the legendary 1939 World's Fair, the Pomonok Country Club where the major tournament was held has long-since fallen to the unyielding march of progress, public housing now standing where Picard sunk a birdie on the thirty-seventh hole to defeat Nelson in the nail-biting match play final.

As most serious golf awards collectors are aware, personal Wanamaker Trophies such as this one were presented years after the early links legends hoisted the single perpetual cup. This is the pot metal version with a silver wash, identical in format to another in our archives deriving from the personal collection of Sam Snead. The important relic measures fifteen inches in height from the black bakelite base to the acorn final at top, that design feature flawlessly reaffixed by a skilled restoration artist.

Engraved text on the loving cup reads, "Annual Championship of the Professional Golfers Association of America Rodman Wanamaker Trophy," while "Henry Picard 1939" is applied in the same font to the metal ring around the base. General handling and storage wear is evident, but the trophy presents very well. It was acquired by our consignor directly from Picard's granddaughter along with a couple other Picard awards appearing in the Final Session of this Platinum Night event.
