    Description
1938 Paul Runyan PGA Championship Gold Medal. The diminutive 5'7", 125lb. Paul Runyan, who averaged only 230 yards per drive, was considered the best "little man" in the game. He was extremely accurate off the tee and from the fairway and was magical around and on the greens. His nickname "Little Poison" personified a fierce competitor with that "Killer Instinct". He won 29 tour victories on the PGA Tour between 1930 and 1941. In addition to winning the 1934 and 1938 PGA Championship tournaments, Runyan played on the Ryder Cup team in 1933 and 1935 and was the leading money winner in 1934.The 1938 PGA gold winner's medal is the later smaller version and is accompanied by an unbelievable hand written letter by Mr. Runyan describing "The Story of the 1938 PGA Championship" In the letter, he describes all of the rounds concluding with the final match against Sam Snead when "I truly had magic in my clubs shooting 66 in the morning round winning all four of the 5 par holes, going to lunch 5 up. Then in the second round... ending the match on the eleventh hole 8 up and 7 to play, which constituted the shortest PGA Championship final match in PGA history! In fact I believe this final match may have been the most significant match in the history of golf, proving that in golf a good little person has a better chance against a good big person than in any other sport." This gold 1938 Winners medal is engraved "The Professional Golfers Association of America Championship Winner 1938" with inset diamond on the front and a modern golfer swinging a golf club with a allegorical nymph in the background on the back. The medal measures 1.75" and weighs forty-eight grams. Lot derives from the Philadelphia Private Golf Museum. Letter of provenance from Paul Runyan.
