Description
1938 Palm Beach Invitational "Goodall Trophy" Won by Sam Snead. Snead's tenth PGA Tour victory came in the most unusual format of any of his tally of eighty-two, a round-robin style featuring five threesomes that rotated after each of the seven matches so that every player faced every opponent. The match play rules awarded a point for every hole won and deducted a point for every hole lost, with the winner determined by the highest total at the end of the lengthy battle. This was the first of five victories for Snead in the tournament, and likewise the very first edition of its twenty-year annual run.Along with a winner's purse of $1,000, Snead earned this impressive trophy for claiming the inaugural tournament's victory, a marvelous thirty-six inch tall memento bearing the details on an engraved plaque on the wooden base:
"The Goodall Trophy, Palm Beach Professional Invitation Match Play Tournament, Kenwood Country Club, Cincinnati, Ohio, June 23-26, 1938, Winner."
From the base rises a wide center column and six thinner Roman columns, supporting a large cup topped by a figural golfer. Short of some crazing to the black paint of the wooden base, it is only at the top of the trophy that we encounter some condition issues, notably some denting to the base of the golfer's platform where it attaches to the lid of the cup, and the loss of the club head held by the golfer. Included is a terrific photo of a smiling twenty-six year old Snead gripping his shiny new trophy at the award ceremonies. Letter of provenance from Jack Snead.
