Description

1938 Canadian Open Championship Trophy Won by Sam Snead. The twenty-six year old Snead would claim the first of three Canadian Open Championships this year, just his tenth PGA Tour victory in a career that would conclude with a record eighty-two. It was the second of six times that the Mississauga Golf and Country Club hosted the event, the first having been won by fellow American golf immortal Walter Hagen in 1931.

This second international victory for Snead (after the 1937 Nassau Open in his 1937 rookie season) was rewarded with the presented trophy. Obverse bears the logo of the Seagram distillery, the sponsor of the tournament, with engraving reading, "Gold Cup, Canadian Open Golf Championship 1938." Verso is engraved, "Won by Sam Snead at Mississauga CC., Score 277, Toronto." The double-handled sterling silver loving cup stands eight inches tall on its green marble base and exhibits no condition issues of note short of an all but imperceptible chip to the bottom of the base. Letter of provenance from Jack Snead.
