Description
1937 US Open Runner-Up Silver Medal Won by Sam Snead. Who could've known that the young Snead's second-place finish in his first US Open would set the painful tone for the many years to come? Even the all-time greats of sport haven't been immune from regret--Ted Williams never won a World Series, and Dan Marino never won a Super Bowl. For the most prolific winner in PGA Tour history, the US Open would prove to be his white whale, a tournament in which he finished second four times, but never claimed for his own.Though the triple-bogey on the seventy-second hole of the 1939 tournament was Snead's most famous US Open stumble, he was arguably best suited to win this 1937 edition, the 7000+ yards of the Oakland Hills course seemingly custom-made for his massive drives. But in the end it was Ralph Guldahl's eagle on eight that proved to be the difference as he outpaced Snead by two shots in the fourth round to claim the $1,000 winner's purse.
Snead misplaced the medal he received at the time of his runner-up finish and was approached by a PGA official when the man noticed its absence is a public display of Snead's hardware. The golf great admitted the loss of the original and the PGA quickly commissioned this replacement to fill the void. A patriotic seal commands the obverse, ringed by raised text announcing, "United States Golf Association, Organized 1894." Engraved on verso: "1937 U.S. Open Championship, Oakland Hills Country Club, Birmingham, MI, Runner-Up, Sam Snead." The sterling silver prize measures 1.75" in diameter and survives in pristine condition in its original "Michael C. Fina, New York" jeweler's box.
