Description

1933-47 West Virginia Open Perpetual Trophy Presented to Sam Snead. Some of Snead's earliest professional victories were earned in the West Virginia Open, and the distinguished sportsman claimed a staggering seventeen titles in the event between 1936 and 1973. Certainly it was this unmatched dominance that led the organizers to grant final ownership of this gorgeous art deco trophy to Snead at some point after its final winner's name was engraved in 1947. Beneath a pair of Victory figures holding aloft a laurel wreath and image of a Golden Age golfer respectively is an engraved band that first announces, "George C. Weimer Perpetual Trophy, West Virginia Open Golf Championship" and then the names of all winners between 1933 and 1947. Unbelievably, the victor of all three tournaments between 1936 and 1938 is engraved as "Sam Sneed," a rather egregious spelling error when considering his importance to the event.

The figurals, which stand atop a small platform engraved with the word "Glory," and the engraved band that belts a painted black metal base, are crafted from sterling silver. There is a small dent beside the right foot of the male figure and general handling wear most evident in paint loss to the base, but the aesthetics remain truly impressive. It's among the most visually arresting relics within The Sam Snead Collection and a piece that was surely a particular favorite of its owner for the many happy memories garnered over four decades of West Virginia Open success. Trophy measures twenty-three inches in height. Letter of provenance from Jack Snead.
