1926 Jim Barnes Wentworth Club Gold Watch Fob. In June of 1926, the British PGA and the US PGA agreed to hold an exhibition match hosted by the Wentworth Club in Surrey, England. Among the spectators was Samuel Ryder, a wealthy British seed merchant, who was so impressed by the exhibition that he funded and founded, beginning in 1927, the biennial event known today as the Ryder Cup. The 1926 Wentworth exhibition was won by the British, who racked up 13 ½ points to only 1 ½ points for the Americans. Although born in England in 1886, Jim Barnes became an American citizen when he immigrated to the United States in 1906. Therefore, he played for the American team along with fellow golfing legends Walter Hagen and another native Brit, Tommy Armour.

Barnes' commemorative gold watch fob from the seminal 1926 event is inscribed on the back, "WENTWORTH CLUB GREAT BRITAIN V U.S.A. JUNE 4TH & 5TH 1926." The piece is fully hallmarked on the bottom. The front depicts a turn-of-the-century golfer in his follow-through. The medallion portion measures 1" in diameter, while the overall length including chain and clasp measures 3". This item may be the earliest piece of memorabilia with a connection to the Ryder Cup, and its significance is further enhanced because it was owned by a great hall-of-famer and four time major championship winner. Excellent condition. Comes with letter of provenance from Jim Barnes' family.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
