Description

1925 Jim Barnes U.S. Open Contestant's Badge. The front of this early medal reads, "Contestant, National Open Championship, June 3-4,1925" with the USGA letters entwined in the middle. The pin back has a hallmark which reads, "The Whitehead & Hoag Co., Newark, NJ." In this event, the thirty-nine year old Jim Barnes tied for twenty-seventh place over a difficult Worcester Massachusetts Country Club layout. Barnes would go on to win the British Open later that year. U.S. Open contestants' badges from this era are quite scarce, but badges belonging to participants who were former champions like Barnes are extremely rare. A wonderful historical piece consigned directly by the Barnes family.
