Description
1919 U.S. Women's Amateur Championship Gold Medal Won by Alexa Stirling. The front of the medal depicts the Great Seal of the United States and reads "United States Golf Association 1919." The garlanded back surrounds the inscription, "Championship, Won by Alexa Stirling, Oct. 6th 1919." Stirling won the final match 6&5 over Margaret Gavin. The medal measures two and a half inches in diameter. Edge has maker's hallmark and "14K" stamping. Housed in original green velvet lined case with "J.E. Caldwell & Co., Philadelphia" embossed gold lettering. Near Mint condition with original patina. Letter of provenance from Stirling family.The Alexa Stirling Collection
One of the famous "Dixie Kids," a group of young Southern golfers that included her friend Bobby Jones, Elaine Rosenthal and Perry Adair, Stirling arguably made her greatest contribution to the sport of golf with her Red Cross tour of exhibitions in support of the World War I effort. But feminists would properly argue that her early fame -she once beat a young Bobby Jones in a match!-was a key step in the acceptance of the female athlete. Stirling remained active in the golf community until her passing in 1977, and was properly honored, albeit posthumously, with induction to the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame the following year. Presented in the lots to follow are a selection of key relics from young Stirling's best years on the links. Each will be accompanied by a letter of provenance from the Stirling family, and make their hobby debut in this Signature Auction.
