Description

1916 Walter Hagen Metropolitan Open Championship Gold Medal. Walter Hagen won this fourteen karat Gold Medal at the Garden City Golf Club in 1916. It was Walter's first of three consecutive wins in the Met Open, a tournament which Hagen stated in his autobiography ranked just below the U.S. Open in importance at that time. In this event Hagen shot 74 in a playoff to beat Jim Barnes and Charles Hoffner after all three tied with a four round total of 307. Hagen's rounds were 77, 79, 78 and 73. Engraved on the back is "Eleventh Open Championship Won By Walter C. Hagen". The front reads "Metropolitan Golf Association Tournament Garden City Golf Club July 13-14 1916". The medal is equipped with a loop for a chain, and measures approximately 1.25" in diameter. Weight is thirty-six grams. The condition is near mint.

Provenance: Consigned to "Sporting Antiquities" auction by the Hagen family in 1991, Lot #920. Lot derives from the Philadelphia Private Golf Museum.
