    Description

1912 Onwentsia Golf Club Figural Duck Glass Decanter With Sterling Head Won By Walter Travis. A lengthy notarized letter of provenance from an early 1980's golf collector tells the tale of a small estate sale in western Massachusetts that featured the golf trophies of pioneering American links legend Walter Travis. While this collector purchased a number of items from the event, he was later able to track down Travis' granddaughter through the auctioneer, who sold him this gorgeous and important crystal figural duck decanter won by Travis a decade after his period of greatest dominance in which he claimed victory in the US (1900, 1901, 1903) and British (1904) Amateur tournaments.

This particular prize bears the details of its presentation on the sterling engraved head of the duck, text that reads, "Onwentsia Pow-wow 1912, Member and Guest, Best Ball, Seventy-two Holes." The head sits atop a beautiful solid blown glass wine decanter with lovely flowing lines. The duck's head lifts up through which wine may be poured and the duck's bill acts as the spout. Hallmarked and in all original very fine condition. Measures about 8" in length and 6" high.

The letter of provenance goes on to report that the decanter was featured in a traveling exhibition orchestrated by the World Golf Hall of Fame, when it shared space with a variety of relics including a British Open Trophy, British Amateur Trophy, US Open Trophy and US Amateur Trophy. The relic remains in fine condition with no damage to note. Notarized letter of provenance from major collector.
