Description

1910's Johnny McDermott USGA Pin. Johnny McDermott (1891-1971) was the first American-born golfer to win the U.S. Open. He is also the youngest, having won at age nineteen in 1911. He repeated the feat in 1912. At age eighteen in 1910, McDermott had lost the U.S. Open in a playoff. After winning several important events around the country in 1913, his future seemed unlimited. However, in late 1914 at the age of only twenty-three he slipped into mental illness, possibly schizophrenia, which confined him to mental hospitals and rest homes for the rest of his life. Periodically, however, he would appear at a golf event as a spectator. In recognition of his early and considerable achievements, the United States Golf Association presented McDermott with a special gold plated medal in the form of a pin which McDermott could use to attend any USGA event free of charge. The front of the medal features the USGA eagle logo and also reads, "USGA Champion John McDermott." The backside is equipped with a hinged pin for McDermott to attach to his clothing. Measures 1.25x1.5". Overall VG+ condition.
