Sterling runner-up medal from the 1923 U.S. Amateur Championship in Flossmoor, Illinois, won by Jess Sweetser. In relief on the front is: "United States Golf Association 1923." Engraved on the back is: "Amateur Championship Runner-up - Flossmoor C.C. - Flossmoor, Illinois - Sept. 15-22nd, 1923." In 1922, Jess won the U.S. Amateur at the Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts. In his last four matches, he beat Willie Hunter, Jessie Guilford (1921 U.S. Amateur Champ), Bobby Jones and Chick Evans. In 1923, Jess came very close to a repeat performance, finally succumbing in the finals to Max Marston. In a match where momentum was continuously changing sides, Jess went 1-up on the 34th hole. On the 35th, Max successfully stymied Jess, tying up the match. Both players birdied the 36th, moving the match into sudden death. Max and Jess tied the 37th hole, but Max won the match in dramatic fashion on the 38th, when he, once again, laid Jess a perfect stymie. See #104 in Sporting Antiquities 1997 Catalog. Size is approximaterly 1 3/4" in diameter. Outstanding.
