Description
1960 De Soto Open Invitational Championship Gold Medal Won by Sam Snead. The seventy-ninth of eight-two PGA Tour victories for the iconic golfer, who would celebrate his forty-eighth birthday the year he earned this impressive prize. The event was held from March 24-27 at the De Soto Lakes Golf and Country Club in Sarasota, Florida, a course today known as the Palm-Aire Country Club. Records for the Sunshine State were set both for total prize money ($40,000) and size of the gallery (10,000 spectators for the final round), and Snead thrilled the massive crowd with a three-under par on Sunday to post a final 276, one stroke better than runner-up Jerry Barber. Snead's purse was $5,300 and the use of a new car for a year. Also presented to Snead that day was the listed medal, featuring the logo of the PGA at obverse and engraved with the details of the win: "De Soto Open Invitational, 1960 Scores 69-72-67-68 - 275." Verso is stamped "14K" and engraved, "Winner, De Soto Open, Sam Snead." Measures one and a half inches in diameter. Fine condition. Letter of provenance from Jack Snead.
