Description

1935 The Masters Tournament Badge Signed by Bobby Jones, Horton Smith. It's a tournament best remembered for Gene Sarazen's stunning final round double eagle on the par five fifteenth hole, a miracle of a four wood shot from 235 yards to move into a tie with Craig Wood and force a thirty-six hole playoff. Sarazen ultimately emerged the victor by a margin of five shots, and his "Shot Heard 'round the World" remains to this day one of the most famous in the sport's history.

The victory would prove to be the last of Sarazen's seven Majors, further elevating the desirability of this exceptionally rare artifact that shared the lush green Augusta course that very day, as evidenced by the text on the circular green cardboard badge announcing "Augusta National Invitational Tournament, Final Round Tournament, Sunday, April 7th." Bearing an original price tag of $2.20, this treasure of the links has appreciated considerably, one of just a tiny handful of surviving examples from the second edition of American golf's most celebrated contest.

But this particular specimen stands head and shoulders above that thin supply due to the addition of autographs from the victor of the inaugural tournament, and that of the links icon who co-founded both the Augusta National and the Masters Tournament. Horton Smith's black ink signature rates a bold 9+/10, while Bobby Jones' pencil registers with 6/10 strength just below. A third signature, that of 1928 US Open victor Johnny Farrell, appears on verso in 9+/10 black ink.

The badge itself survives in remarkable fine condition, with no creasing, tearing or staining to mention. Even the original string remains in place. A dream piece for the advanced golf collector, the badge is encapsulated in a PSA/DNA holder authenticating the autographs, and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from renowned golf collectibles expert Mark Emerson. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA. LOA from Mark Emerson. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.
