The second of two consecutive victories in the tournament

1929 Leo Diegel PGA Championship Gold Medal. Hillcrest Country Club in Los Angeles was chosen as the site of the twelfth edition of the PGA Championship, the first major Championship ever played in the western United States. But other than the unique and exotic locale, the tournament proved to be nearly a carbon copy of its predecessor. Once again, Leo Diegel was pitted against links legends Gene Sarazen and Walter Hagen in the quarterfinals and semifinals (reversing the order of the 1928 tournament) to reach the final and defeat a third pantheon member in the form of Johnny Farrell by a six-and-four tally. It would prove to be Diegel's second and final Major victory of thirty PGA Tour wins. Heritage is pleased and honored to offer both of those Championship awards in this Platinum Night auction.

This is the latter of the two, physically identical to its older brother in every regard but for the engraving style and date that appears at the lower edge of obverse: "Leo Diegel 1929." Raised lettering above announces, "Professional Golfer's Association of America" against a figural golf bag and winding laurels, while verso references Greek and Roman aesthetics in the heroic forms of golfer and caddy. The design is attributed to renowned artist and sculptor Henning Ryden. This early format was only used for about a decade before it was replaced by a smaller and less ornate version in the mid-1930's. Like the 1928 medal, this example sports a replacement diamond on obverse, but is otherwise superior in condition to its twin, without any surface wear of note. Diameter two inches (2").
