Description
1917 Jim Barnes Red Cross Exhibition Medal. During World War I, just four years after Francis Ouimet's stunning victory in the 1913 US Open, golfers were implored to play exhibition matches to help raise money for the War effort. The American Red Cross was the main beneficiary and sponsor of these exhibitions and the greatest golfers of the day obliged in great numbers. No golfer could have been in more demand than the recently crowned victor of the very first PGA Championship at Siwanoy Country Club than Jim Barnes. This medal was given to Mr. Barnes as he competed in one of these Red Cross matches. The front of the medal cites the venue---"Inwood Country Club Incorporated 1901"---written on red and white enamel encircling the raised relief of a golfer swinging. And the back of the medal has the remnants of the Red Cross logo and the following writing: "Red Cross Fund Barnes Nichols Strong Dowling May 5, 1917."
Diameter is approximately 1.25". Some oxidation and minor enamel loss to Red Cross logo. These exhibitions were usually foursomes and Messers Nichols, Strong and Dowling filled out the group. This is a unique piece of golf memorabilia from a unique time in our country's history.
