Description

1972 Arnold Palmer Shoe Bag from The Masters.
Augusta was the site of The King's greatest glories, representing more than half of his seven Major Championships (1958, 1960, 1962, 1964), but in 1972 the links icon would watch fellow Hall of Famer Jack Nicklaus don the Green Jacket as he finished a disappointing twelve strokes over par. But any relic linking Palmer to The Masters is one of extraordinary collecting intrigue, so we're pleased to present this appropriately green-colored leather shoe bag issued to him for use during that visit to Bobby Jones' masterpiece course.

The bag appears to have been the victim of poor storage in an area subject to the whims of Mother Nature, causing the skin to peel away in places, exposing the padding underneath. Thankfully the "Masters Tournament" text on the bag is unaffected, as is the "1972 Contestant" badge which identifies this as Palmer's personal model. It measures about 13x10x4", not including the handles.

Our consignor tells us that he acquired the bag directly from Palmer's caddy, and at the time this catalog goes to print he is in the process of attempting to get a letter of provenance from that caddy. We will update the online text if he is successful. If not, a letter from our consignor attesting to this provenance will be supplied instead.
