    Description

    R. White rut or track iron circa 1880. Manufactured by Robert White in St. Andrews, Scotland. This interesting collectible has a small oval head with excellent old patina, thick hosel, short but deep nicking, hickory shaft and replacement suede grip. Back in the 1700 and 1800s, when many golf courses in Scotland were located on town or public land, residents often drove their wagons over the courses on their way home, creating ruts from their wheels. Golfers needed a special club to extricate themselves from these wagon tracks, hence the invention of the small-headed track or rut iron. There are some small rock dents along the leading edge and lower hosel, and the grip is a modern replacement. Average to good.
