    Description

McEwan play club with slight spoon to face. Old dark brown stain and finish, oval lead back weight, three-dowel horn sole, and impressed block printed "McEwan" stamp on the head. The hickory shaft, neck whipping and russet grip are old and possibly original. A professional repair was made to the face using a leather patch. There is a small chip out of the horn sole and some weathering on top of the head. McEwan is one of the most famous names in club making. It was a family business, which started with James back in the third quarter of the 18th century and continued for over 150 years. Several family members made long nose clubs, including the aforementioned James, as well as Peter, Douglas, Peter II (Douglas's son), and Douglas II (Peter II's son). The McEwans started making clubs in Edinburgh and added a shop Musselburgh in the mid-nineteenth century. Circa 1865. Head 6" from toe to heel; face 1 1/4"; shaft 44". Average to good.
