    Description

Circa 1900 "Old Tom" Morris Signed Cabinet Photograph. He struck the first shot in the inaugural British Open (then called The Open Championship), winning four of the seven to follow in 1861, 1862, 1864 and 1867. Remembered as the foremost pioneer of the early game, Old Tom was likewise one of its most diverse practitioners, serving as greenkeeper, clubmaker, ballmaker, instructor and course designer during his decades of service to the sport. His dedication to golf extended to the very last days of his life, as Morris perished from injuries sustained during a fall down a flight of stairs at the New Golf Club in St. Andrews just before his eighty-seventh birthday.

Despite Morris' long life and decades of fame, autographed material is exceedingly scarce, with signed images all but non-existent. Here we present one of the finest from that narrow supply, featuring a 9+/10 black fountain pen autograph at the lower margin, where it shares space with the imprinted logo of a local St. Andrews photographic studio. The cabinet likewise survives with remarkable strength, providing no condition issues of note save for tape on verso from scrapbook application. Dimensions are 4x6.5". Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.
