1957 Bobby Jones Signed Check & Letter Display. Herbert Warren Wind, the esteemed golf journalist for The New Yorker, and later Sports Illustrated, once wrote of Bobby Jones, "In the opinion of many people, of all the great athletes, Jones came the closest to being what we call a great man." In the small gesture recounted by this heartwarming display, we see that Wind was correct in his assessment. A May 7, 1957 typed letter on Jones' personal letterhead makes a sincere apology to a fan who had sent him money in the hopes of receiving a Masters Tournament program in return. Jones laments that the letter had been missed, hidden beneath his writing pad, and goes on to explain that programs were not issued for the tournament. He then writes, "Instead of the 50ยข referred to in your letter, you actually enclosed three quarters. May I add a fourth for the use of this important sum of money? More importantly, I do send you my most abject apology." He signs, "Robert T. Jones, Jr." at the close. Framed just below is the uncashed check for one dollar, folded at center from mailing, signed identically to the letter. In an age in which millionaire athletes buzz past their fans in limousines, this touching display of humility and generosity makes us long all the more those days when chivalry was still alive and well in professional athletics. The gorgeously framed display measures 25x26" in size. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication. Third party shipping is required.
