    Description

1956 Bobby Jones Signed Letter re: Retiring after Winning Grand Slam. If there is a better Jones letter out there, we haven't seen it. While his 9/10 blue ink autograph may be showing the early signs of the degenerative disease that would ultimately claim his life nine years later, Jones' typed text shows the fire of youth in a characteristically polite but still somewhat pointed defense of his celebrated career. In full: "Replying to your letter of September 6th, the collection of 'trophies' had nothing to do with my interest in golf or my determination to retire. I quit because for several years I had been finding it more and more difficult to get myself keyed up to the necessary pitch to be willing to take the punishment of intense competition. I was simply looking for a convenient place to stop, and found it when I won the four championships of the Grand Slam in 1930." The letter exhibits original mailing folds but no other faults, and is matted and framed with a modern print of a Jones photo to dimensions of 16x19". Pre-Certified by PSA/DNA.
