Description

1940's Walter Hagen Signed Photograph, PSA Mint 9. Only Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus have topped Hagen's tally of eleven majors, and the distinction of being the first American to win the British Open is Hagen's alone. A small twist of fate may have found Hagen a star ballplayer instead--he missed a tryout with the Philadelphia Phillies the week he won the U.S. Open for the first time, and the rest, as they say, is history. This oversized (11x12") photo shows the master at work, interrupted only by the magnificently bold black fountain pen inscription that reads, "To Harry Obitz, a real fellow and a credit to the profession, Golfingly, Walter Hagen." Obitz, as noted in the copy for the Craig Wood signed photograph also in this auction, was a major figure in the golf world from the 1920's through the 1960's, an author of several books on golfing and the designer of more than sixty courses. This photo from his collection remains in strong condition, with the only noteworthy flaw a tear at the left border that doesn't extend into the image area. PSA/DNA has deemed the ink quality a 9/10 in boldness. LOA from PSA/DNA. LOA from James Spence Authentication.
