Description

1908 Old Tom Morris Signed Photographic Print. He struck the first shot in the inaugural British Open (then called The Open Championship), winning four of the seven to follow in 1861, 1862, 1864 and 1867. Remembered as the foremost pioneer of the early game, Old Tom was likewise one of its most diverse practitioners, serving as greenkeeper, clubmaker, ballmaker, instructor and course designer during his decades of service to the sport. His dedication to golf extended to the very last days of his life, as Morris perished from injuries sustained during a fall down a flight of stairs at the New Golf Club in St. Andrews just before his eighty-seventh birthday.

Despite Morris' long life and decades of fame, autographed material is exceedingly scarce, with signed images all but non-existent. Here we present the most remarkable example we've yet encountered, a splendid image of the ancient linksman disengaging himself from a bunker at St. Andrews. Morris' white ink signature at lower right is dated "1908" in his hand, the year of his passing on May 24th. As such, this could be considered one of the very last autographs of his life.

The photographic image measures an impressive 10x12", with the wide borders and original wooden frame expanding the final dimensions to approximately 13x16". The sepia image presents wonderfully with only the slightest toning, and Morris' signature rates a solid 8/10. One of the greatest autographed golf artifacts available in the collecting hobby, for the uncompromising hobbyist. Full LOA from Mark Emerson.
