Description

1902 Old Tom Morris Signed Photographic Print. He struck the first shot in the inaugural British Open (then called The Open Championship), winning four of the seven to follow in 1861, 1862, 1864 and 1867. Remembered as the foremost pioneer of the early game, Old Tom was likewise one of its most diverse practitioners, serving as greenkeeper, clubmaker, ballmaker, instructor and course designer during his decades of service to the sport. His dedication to golf extended to the very last days of his life, as Morris perished from injuries sustained during a fall down a flight of stairs at the New Golf Club in St. Andrews just before his eighty-seventh birthday.

Despite Morris' long life and decades of fame, autographed material is exceedingly scarce, with signed images all but non-existent. Here we present the most remarkable example we've yet encountered, a splendid image of the ancient linksman disengaging himself from a bunker at St. Andrews. Morris' black fountain pen signature at lower right is dated "1902" in his hand. The writing averages to about 6/10, readily legible.

The photographic image measures an impressive 10x12", with the wide borders expanding the final dimensions to approximately 12x15". The sepia image presents wonderfully with only the slightest toning. Letter of authenticity from Mark Emerson. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.
