Circa 1980 Football Game Original Painting by LeRoy Neiman. Neiman's ebullient impressionistic style has enjoyed decades of popularity among the general male population since his buddy Hugh Hefner gave him his start at Playboy, and he quickly became synonymous with sports art, creating program covers for Heavyweight Championship fights, the Indy 500 and the World Series. But we still find ourselves near the very beginning of his wider acceptance in the rarefied air of galleries from Soho to Beverly Hills, suggesting the real pricing boom is still around the corner.

Those believing that Neiman's path will mirror those of Rockwell and Elvgren will see tremendous opportunity here, in this arresting study of our National Pastime. The 8x10" oil on board leans heavily upon all the trademarks of Neiman's style, with a daring color palette and thick paint application. Neiman's signature is boldly rendered at lower right corner. The work is framed to a museum-quality 23x26". Fine condition with no faults of note.

This painting, and a similar baseball example, are consigned to this auction by the granddaughter of an old friend of Neiman who made decorative ceramic liquor bottles and commissioned the famous painter to create two works for that purpose. Google "LeRoy Neiman bottle" and you'll see examples utilizing the images.
