More Information: The Tom Brady Trading Card Collection,

Mark Twain once said, "History doesn't repeat itself, but it rhymes." That's certainly a truism for the sports collectibles marketplace, where we have seen trading cards of elite stars begin to crest when the fans who were young during those athletes' prime enter their peak earning years. Look at what is happening to Michael Jordan cards right now and you'll see echoes of what happened to Mickey Mantle a generation earlier. Thankfully, the trend for every trading card of significance has been rising since sports collectibles auctions first turned the hobby into an international marketplace, but the spikes have always seemed to come at the same distance from an athlete's retirement.

So we're left to wonder--what will the spike for Tom Brady look like? It's unlikely that it's happening right now, as the seven-time Super Bowl Champion continues to reign as the handsome face of the National Football League. We fully expect that collectors will one day look at the prices realized for the remarkable collection that follows and marvel at the bargains in much the same way that we look back on pricing for Michael Jordan rookies ten or twenty years ago with an aching sense of regret that we didn't invest everything we had.

As Brady himself has shown us, even the most outrageous records are made to be broken--just ask his personal football hero, four-time Super Bowl Champion Joe Montana. And while it's difficult to imagine that anybody but Tom himself will win eight of them, it's just as difficult to believe we're anywhere close to the top of his market as he remains in active duty. The cards on the pages that follow--the pride and joy of a single Heritage consignor--are almost certainly just beginning their climb to their eventual pricing peaks.
